FAQ’s

The Food

Does the food contain any preservatives or additives?

No!

We are passionate about providing your child with healthy meals containing natural wholefoods only. The ingredients listed on each product page is all that is contained within each meal. One of the main reasons we started First Bites was following our own experience of weaning our son and ensuring he ate quality meals. The meals we provide are meals that we have and will feed our son.

What are the 4 stages of meals that you offer?

The stages refer to varying textures of the meals. Early introduction to a variety of textures is important for babies development. Not only does it teach them how to chew to enable them to eat, but it also develops their teeth and jaw, building skills for speech development.

Our 4 stages are:

Stage 1 - Smooth - Perfect for first time eaters (least challenging).

Stage 2 - Textured - A thicker creamy consistency.

Stage 3 - Chunky - Slightly firmer, thicker consistency with soft chewable chunks

Stage 4 - Pinchables - Small pieces of whole vegetables, legumes and grains (most challenging)

What if my child doesn't like the food?

Babies won't like everything you give them, it's completely normal! It can take up to 15 - 20 exposures before a baby learns a new taste.

We encourage repeated exposure (and some patience), this will help your little ones development and long term relationship with food. However, if there is something your baby really doesn't like, we have a wide selection of meals available and we are constantly working on new recipes.

Is there a particular dish you would like to see? Please get in touch!

Do you cater for allergens?

Yes!

Our meals cover a range of preferences and dietary requirements and we are constantly looking to add more.

Please be aware that our meals are made in a facility where milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, fish, shellfish, soy and wheat products may be present. Whilst we take great care when preparing our meals to minimise risk and safely handle foods that contain potential allergens, please be advised that there is still a small risk cross contamination may occur.

We also acknowledge the importance of early introduction of babies to the common food allergens, which is why we also offer meals that contain these allergens.

Allergens should be introduced in very small amounts to minimise any possible reaction, slowly working up to larger servings. If you are anxious to introduce allergens, seek professional guidance.

If you have any special requests, or questions, please get in touch!

How do I store First Bites meals?

Our meals are delivered frozen, this way we can lock in the nutrients and flavour without the unnecessary processing, preservatives or additives.

Place your meals straight in the freezer once they arrive and they will be at their best for 4 months from arrival.

How long will the food last?

As your meals are delivered frozen, they will last upto 4 months in the freezer.

Once de-frosted (overnight), your meals will last for 2 - 3 days stored in an air tight container in the fridge.

Once heated through, all contents need to be eaten or discarded.

How do I cook the meals?

We recommend defrosting your childs meals overnight, or for 4 hours in the refrigerator prior to heating.

Our meals can be heated from frozen in the microwave or on the stove.

If cooking from frozen - Remove the lid and heat one container at a time in the microwave on high for 1.5 - 2 minutes. Time may vary depending on microwave power.

If defrosted - Remove the lid and heat one container at a time in the microwave on high for 20 - 30 seconds till warm through, or alternatively eat cold.

Contents of the container can also be removed and heated on the stove on low heat untill defrosted and warm through.

My child didn't finish the meal, how long will it keep in the fridge for?

In order to reduce waste, it is best to defrost the meals overnight and only heat through enough food that your child will finish in one meal. This way you can store the remainder of the meal in an air tight container in the fridge for 2 - 3 days.

Once heated through (or defrosted in the microwave), all contents need to be eaten or discarded.

Do you source your ingredients from Australia?

Yes! We aim to source the highest quality produce, from local suppliers where possible.

The Packaging

Are your containers BPA free?

Yes, our containers are BPA free and made from polypropyene (PP) - Plastic Type 5. They are freezer, microwave and top shelf dishwasher safe.

Are your containers recyclable?

Yes, our containers are recyclable and reusable. Should you wish to recycle, containers should be washed before being placed in your yellow lid bin. If you would like to reuse the container to store food, or for crafts with your little one, the containers are top shelf dishwasher safe.

What are the products delivered in?

The meals you order are placed into an insulated lined cardboard box for delivery. The cardboard box can be recycled in your yellow lid bin and the insulated liner can be recycled at Redcycle bins at major supermarkets.

During our start-up Redcycle collections were put on pause, this impacted our own high sustainability targets. We understand they are still exploring options to re-commence the service, but we will continue to strive to identify alternate recyclable solutions.

The liners and ice packs are re-usable, if maintained in good condition. If you would like to return them to us for a discount off your next delivery, please get in touch.

What size are the containers?

We know freezer space is precious!! Our containers are petite and stackable for your convenience. The containers are cylindrical with a diameter of 6.9cm and stand 6.5cm tall.

We currently stock one size of our blends - 120g. Please let us know if you are interested in the option of different serving sizes and we will look to work this into our future plans.
